Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout is one of my favourite books. It's a novel made up of interlinked short stories set in a fishing village in Maine. In designing a cover for it I thought about themes of memory and regret, and also on the the ties that bind people together. In the book these connections can be life affirming, but they can also feel like traps that hold the characters back from some other imagined life they could be living.
I made net by hand using twine and youtube tutorials, and photographed it on a sunny day with good crisp shadows.
